Live Minimal Live Free - where does the name come from?

The name of this blog comes from a quote from the American President Benjamin Franklin "Live Frugal Live Free". We live in an age of debt and massive consumption. I don't know if there is genuinely an increased interest in living simpler lives or if my awareness has just increased. There seem to be more articles and discussions going on about living a simple life or living minimally. The core aim is to reduce the number of complications in our lives, to instead prioritise the rich and valuable aspects. The title doesn't use the word 'frugal' as it's too old fashioned. 'Minimal' is much more a part of the discussion now.

This blog is about trying to change my life and to offer advice on cutting out the things that pull us down and pull us in different directions - to reduce debt, guilt, obligations and unnecessary possessions which can complicate our lives and make us unhappy.

"Tis easier to suppress the first desire than to satisfy all that follow it"
Benjamin Franklin

Whilst Franklin wrote this in his essay Way to Wealth in 1758, he could not have known how relevant it would be today. It's easy to look back on quotes from hundreds of years ago and see them as not applicable to us now, but some things both don't change, they get worse. We might look back at technology, like early mobile phones, and laugh at their lack of complexity, but ideas can be ageless.
